Overview

Shongololo Express began operations in 1995 to provide a very special touring experience for visitors to Southern Africa. Itinerary Details

Pretoria – Walvis Bay or v.v

Day 1 : Depart Pretoria

Check in to Rovos Rail Station, enjoy tea as the train departs for the Kimberley. (D)

Day 2 : Kimberley

Enjoy breakfast before approaching Kimberley. As you arrive, you will have the chance to see flocks of Lesser flamingoes around a shallow lake on the right-hand side of the train. Upon arrival, you will be taken on a tour of the city, Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Return to the train as you depart Kimberley and travel through the Karoo. (B, L, D)

Day 3 : Upington

Enjoy a morning tour of Upington and wine tasting at Bezalel Brandy & Wine Cellar. The train departs Upington for Nakop for border formalities with Namibia. Enjoy lunch on board. Overnight Holoog. (B, L, D)

Day 4 : Fish River Canyon

This morning you will visit Fish River Canyon. Return to the train for lunch. (B, L, D)

Day 5 : Kolmanskop and Luderitz

An early breakfast is served before visiting the ghost town of Kolmanskop. Also visit Luderitz, known for its museum, architecture and wildlife. Return to the train and depart for Keetmanshoop. (B, D)

Day 6 : Keetmanshoop and Garas Park

Morning tour of Keetmanshoop. See the Giant’s Playground and Quiver Tree Forest, home to 300 species of the Aloe dichotomy. Return to the train and depart for Mariental. Enjoy lunch on board. (B, L, D)

Day 7 : Sossusvlei

Transfer to a Sossusvlei lodge in the Namib Naukluft Park. Visit the Sesriem Canyon. Overnight at lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 8 : Sossusvlei and Namib Naukluft Park

Enjoy an early breakfast before being transferred to the Deadvlei. Watch the sunrise at Dune 45 before brunch at the lodge. Take a scenic drive through the Namib-Naukluft Park before returning to the train. Depart for Rehoboth. (B, L, D)

Day 9 : Windhoek

This morning you will be taken on a city tour of Windhoek. See the Trans-Namib Transport Museum, the Alte Feste (Old Fortress), the Evangelical Lutheran Church – a striking landmark – and the Namibia Craft Centre in the old Breweries Building. Return to the train and depart for Otjiwarongo. Enjoy lunch on board. (B, L, D)

Day 10 : Etosha National Park

You will be transferred to a lodge in Etosha National Park. Enjoy game-viewing activities. Overnight at lodge. (B, L, D)

Day 11 : Etosha National Park

Enjoy a morning game drive before checking out and returning to the train. Rejoin the train in Otjiwarongo and depart for Kranzberg for overnight. (B, L, D)

Day 12 : Arrive Walvis Bay

Arrive at Walvis Bay Station, marking the end of your journey. (B)
